Question by aloush: Rome, Italy: what to see in 1 day?
I am going to stay 1 day in Rome. Arriving early morning, and leaving around 6PM.
1. What’s the fastest way to reach Rome centre from Fiumicino airport?
2. I’d like to see Vatican City, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Piazza Navona, The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagna, The Sistine Chapel, Palatine.
What out of above I will be able to see in 6-7 hours?
3. Are there some inexpensive hotels/motels beside the airport so that I could have a rest there 2-3 hours?
Any other suggestions/advices/info are welcomed!
Thanks a lot!!

I recommend skipping the Hotel and just go straight to the Vatican. The Vatican is the best place to exchange money also. Everything is right there. You can take a guided tour, check out www.expedia.com for pre-purchasing the guided tours. There is a nice walking tour through the Forum, but you can get sweaty. You might just purchase a bus tour, as they will drive you past and give you walking time at the highlights. This might be a good idea, or simply getting a taxi and negotiating with the driver to hang out while you run and get some photos here and there. I did this in Pisa and the driver was great- even took the photos for me. There is a great old church near the Colosseum called San Pietro di Vincoli, I think, something like that. It shows the actual chains that St. Peter escaped from when he was jailed in Jerusalem. The church was built with the columns from the old Pagan Roman Hall of Justice where prisoners were often flogged, so the columns show scars up to about seven feet or height where the prisoners were tied. Amazing thing to see. It is also a quiet spot, very reverent and thought provoking. There is so much to see. For a special treat, I recommend the Chinese food in Rome, believe it or not. It is really, really good- LOL. If you speak Spanish you are in for a treat- you can use it throughout Rome. Good luck! You will have a great time :o )

Catch the train to Termini Station (it is the Central train station), then you can go in Via Cavour until Colosseum and the Imperials Fourm, near you can walk to Corso Street, using a map, you can see it’s very easy to visit the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and People Square. The Vatican, the is not near by feet, so it’s better for you to visit also the Mouth of Truth, The Italian Parliament, all the center. Look the map, you can’t make a mistakes! The Sistine Chapel is really hard to visit, it is in the Vatican’s Museum , the are a very long row to enter in and it takes a lot of time to arrive to the chapel: the Museums are really big. So I suppose you have to come back in Rome; as someone said: Rome wasn’t built in a day!!!

You can easily kill the whole day in going to the Vatican and Sistene Chapel. I recommend going inside the Basilica but if you want to do all that other stuff then you might want to skip the Sistene Chapel. The Colosseum is completely opposite the Vatican in Rome. Trevi Fountain is a quick stop. Piazza di Spagna may be too. I lingered for a while at Piazza di Spagna but all there is to do is sit on the steps or go up them for a photo op. Go see them for sure but you don’t have to spend a lot of time there.

    My God…6-7 hours?
From Fiumicino di City center : leonardo Express train is the fastest way (not the cheaper)
Sixtine Chapel is impossible : you need a ticket to the vatican Museums . That’s means queue, a mandatory way to follow, crowds etc…
From termini take the underground ( A line, orange) :
    a) first stop at Piazza di Spagna (Spanish steps, via Condotti and the Bernini Fountain all in 20 meters)
    b) second stop : Flaminio . That means Piazza del Popolo and its three churches (with celeb paintings from Caravaggio too)
    c) third stop : Ottaviano : 300 meters from Saint peter Square. You can visit the Basilica ( not less than 45 minutes)
    d) On the way back: along via della Conciliazione you’ll see the Castle of Rome (Castel sant’Angelo)
than take the bus express 40 and get off in Corso Vittorio. Walk a few meters and you’ll see Piazza Navona.
    e) In largo Argentina (50 meters from Piazza Navona) take the bus n.87 and it will drive you to Colleum and Palatine. Then, in front of Colosseum take the underground B ( blue line) to Termini .
    f) Leonardo express again to Fiumicino Airport.
But you’ll have to run !
